New activities have been added prior to the seventh annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, in Downtown Lee’s Summit. Applications for parade entries are now being accepted.

In addition to the parade, new festivities this year include a Traditional Irish Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. hosted at Mingle, 209 S.E. Main St., and a Gold Coin Hunt for ages 8 and younger at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Plaza, 220 S.E. Green St. The downtown bars and restaurants will again host an Emerald Isle Pub Crawl immediately following the parade. Tickets for the Irish Breakfast can be purchased in advance by calling the DLSMS office at 816-246-6598. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for ages 10 and younger. Tickets at the door are $12; $7 for ages 10 and younger.

This year’s parade theme, “Bits O’ Blarney,” is meant to be playful and open to interpretation. Blarney can refer to several things: the town in Ireland, the castle, and the famed stone on which visitors partake in the ritual of kissing it for the gift of eloquence. The word also can be playfully used when someone expresses flattery or talks a lot. Businesses and families are encouraged to decorate their entries and floats for St. Patrick’s Day while also interpreting the parade theme.

Application fees are $30 for nonprofit and family entries, or $75 for commercial, political, small business and other entries. The fees for marching bands, color guards and pipers are waived. Rules and application forms for parade entry can be found at www.downtownls.org/parade or by calling 816-246-6598. The application deadline is Feb. 24, 2012.

This year’s grand marshal is Steve Tominia, former Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street board president and owner of Cameron’s Home Furnishings. He is being recognized for his years of distinguished service to the downtown community. Tominia was Downtown Lee’s Summit’s biggest cheerleader through construction and streetscape improvements from 2006 to 2008. He continues to be an advocate for the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit, as well as downtowns everywhere.

Chuck Denton, owner of Doherty & Sullivan’s Irish Goods in Downtown Lee’s Summit and chairman of the Emerald Isle Parade Committee, said he hopes people will spend the entire day in Downtown Lee’s Summit.

“We always have great crowds, which shows that people want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day right here in Lee’s Summit,” he said. “This year, we hope people come not only for the parade, but also to enjoy the new festivities and the wonderful variety of shops and restaurants our downtown has to offer.”

The parade is presented by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, and is sponsored by the Bank of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Journal. DLSMS is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit. For more information, visit www.downtownls.org or call 816-246-6598.

LEE’S SUMMIT, MO — Following a nationwide search and candidate interviews with an eight-person selection committee, the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street board of directors voted this evening to accept the committee’s choice for the organization’s next executive director. Trisha Drape, a downtown Lee’s Summit resident for more than 17 years, was named the new DLSMS executive director; she will undertake this role beginning Nov. 11.

DLSMS began looking for a new executive director in July when Jeanine Rann, who had served in this position for eight years, was named the community development coordinator for Missouri Main Street Connection, of which DLSMS is a member.

“I believe Trisha will be a great asset to the DLSMS organization,” said Ryan Smarr, president of the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street board of directors. “She comes with a wealth of experience and knowledge, as well as great familiarity with the organization having been an active volunteer on many different levels.”

The majority of Drape’s career has been spent in the publishing/newspaper industry, primarily with The Kansas City Star and the Lee’s Summit Journal, where she served as the editor from 2001 to 2006. After which, Drape was the director of communications for the Aircraft Electronics Association, an international trade association headquartered in Lee’s Summit, and the editor of its magazine. Most recently, she was director of a nonprofit arts organization.

“Trisha has the work ethic, people skills and ability to lead this organization to the next level,” said Gary Fruits, longtime DLSMS board member. “She is well known in the organization and to the business and real estate owners in the greater downtown area. She will do a great job.”

For nearly as many years as she has lived in the Lee’s Summit community, Drape has been a volunteer for Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street. Earlier this year, she was the recipient of DLSMS’s Mary Stacy Ambassador of the Year Award for her work in promoting the downtown area. Drape also was elected to two terms on the DLSMS board of directors. Through her work on the board, she has served on the Economic Restructuring Committee and has attended various revitalization and preservation training opportunities offered through Missouri Main Street Connection.

Drape is active with other nonprofit organizations and community committees, and she serves on the Lee’s Summit Arts Council and LS360’s Community Branding Committee. She also has coached youth sports, been active in her children’s schools and founded a popular book club in Lee’s Summit eight years ago.

Drape and her husband, Tim Drape, who works for The Kansas City Star, have three children: a daughter, Taylor, who attends Missouri State University, and son Luke and daughter Kacey, who both attend Lee’s Summit High School.

“A sense of place and community is truly important to me, as it is for most residents of Lee’s Summit,” Drape said. “Downtown Lee’s Summit is the heart of this community and it helps creates a sense of place and connectivity. I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing every day than working with the merchants, residents and stakeholders of Downtown Lee’s Summit. And sincerely, it would be difficult to find a better staff and board to work with.

“I’m looking forward to working with all of these individuals to ensure Downtown Lee’s Summit continues to sustain its high standards and finds new ways to bring even more people to our vibrant and revitalized Downtown on a daily and nightly basis,” she said.

Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market Named as one of Top 20 Favorite Farmers Markets in America’s Favorite Farmer’s Markets™ Contest

The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market was recently voted as #7 of 20 leading farmers markets across the nation vying for the title of America’s Favorite Farmers Market in the medium-sized markets category. The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market was also voted favorite farmers market in Missouri. In this year’s contest more than 90,000 farmers market shoppers voted for more than 1,700 participating farmers markets in American Farmland Trust’s third annual contest.

The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market offers a variety of fresh produce, baked goods, crafts & more. Located at the corner of Second and Douglas Streets in Downtown Lee’s Summit, the market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 am – sell out through November 5.

The Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market received 743 votes from supportive shoppers. Here is what one voter for the Downtown Lee’s Summit Farmers Market had to say about why it should be named one of America’s Favorite Farmers Markets:

“I love the produce, the baked goods and especially the people! The atmosphere is wonderful, and we are such a community-oriented city that this is the perfect addition to being one of the best downtowns in the country.”

According to the recent release of the updated U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s farmers market directory, the number of farmers markets across the nation increased by 17 percent between 2010 and 2011. Support for farmers markets helps to provide income opportunities for farmers. The rising interest for local food from nearby farms highlights the value of protecting farmland to meet demand.

The America’s Favorite Farmers Markets contest is a part of American Farmland Trust’s No Farms No Food® campaign, which raises awareness of the dangers of farmland loss by making connections to food. Farms near metropolitan areas produce 91 percent of the nation’s market value of fruit, 78 percent of vegetables, and 67 percent of dairy products.
