Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street has been designated as an accredited National Main Street program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center. Each year, the National Trust and its partners announce the list of accredited Main Street programs that have built strong revitalization organizations and demonstrate their ability in using the Main Street Four-Point Approach methodology for strengthening their local economy and protecting their historic buildings.

“We congratulate this year’s nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting our established performance standards,” said Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. “Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the recession head on and are successfully using a focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant and sustainable.”

The organization’s performance is annually evaluated by Missouri Main Street Connection, which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street program’s application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach to commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as developing a mission, fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress, and preserving historic buildings.

Thousands Descend on Downtown Lee’s Summit for Day-Long Event

Thousands of spectators and more than 1,100 parade participants, along with picture-perfect parade weather on Saturday, helped make this year’s Emerald Isle Parade in Downtown Lee’s Summit the largest ever.

“Bits O’ Blarney” was this year’s parade theme, and entries interpreted the theme in a variety of creative and fun ways. Five participants were awarded trophies: Henry’s Antiques – St. Patrick’s Award (Best Use of Theme); Rotary Clubs of Lee’s Summit – Best Float; Marian’s Kids – Best Marching Unit; Kutumba (KC Drum Tribe) – Best Musical Entry; and Coldwater – Most Unique. Parade judges included Dr. Fred Grogan, president of MCC-Longview; Father Tom Holder of Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church; Pat O’Neill of O’Neill Communications; and Mrs. Missouri America Tina York of Lee’s Summit.

New activities were added before and after this year’s parade. Nearly 150 people began the day with a Traditional Irish Breakfast at Mingle, and approximately 100 children participated in the Bits O’ Gold Coin Hunt in City Hall Plaza. The Bank of Lee’s Summit balloon release signified the parade’s entrance into the heart of Downtown Lee’s Summit, and the Irish band DogTree performed after the parade in Howard Station Park.

This year’s Grand Marshal was Steve Tominia, former board president of Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street and owner of Cameron’s Home Furnishings. The parade chairman was Chuck Denton, owner of Doherty & Sullivan’s Irish Goods. Parade sponsors were Bank of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Journal.

The Emerald Isle Parade, which takes place the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, is presented by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit.

In its seventh year, the Emerald Isle Parade, which takes place the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day, has grown to 87 entries and more than 1,100 people taking part in the parade — and those numbers don’t include the thousands who come out to witness the Irish, or Irish-for-a-day, event.

This year’s parade starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, beginning at Lee’s Summit High School, picking up on Green Street, where it heads north to Third Street, then turns west toward the Judge’s Stand, then north onto S.E. Main Street.

The festivities, however, get under way well in advance of the parade. This year, a Traditional Irish Breakfast starts the day off from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Mingle, 209 S.E. Main St., and the Bits O’ Gold Coin Hunt for ages 8 and younger begins at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Plaza, 220 S.E. Green St.

Then, at noon, a few Downtown businesses are taking part in another new tradition: golf cart parade entries. Those businesses that have reserved a golf cart have only from noon to 1 p.m. to quickly decorate their golf carts to get into the Irish spirit. Watch for these new additions in the parade route.

Around 1 p.m., watch for the Bank of Lee’s Summit balloon release, which signals the parade is nearing Downtown Lee’s Summit.

After the parade, DogTree, a favorite Irish band, will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. in Howard Station Park, at the corner of Third and S.E. Main streets. Also at 2 p.m., the Downtown Lee’s Summit bars and restaurants will again host the Emerald Isle Pub Crawl.

Chuck Denton, owner of Doherty & Sullivan’s Irish Goods in Downtown Lee’s Summit and chairman of the Emerald Isle Parade Committee, said he hopes people will spend the entire day in Downtown Lee’s Summit.

“We always have great crowds, which shows that people want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day right here in Lee’s Summit,” Denton said. “This year, we hope people come not only for the parade, but also to enjoy the new festivities and the wonderful variety of shops and restaurants our downtown has to offer.”

This year’s parade theme, “Bits O’ Blarney,” is meant to be playful and open to interpretation. Blarney can refer to several things: the town in Ireland, the castle, and the famed stone on which visitors partake in the ritual of kissing it for the gift of eloquence. The word also can be playfully used when someone expresses flattery or talks a lot.

This year’s grand marshal is Steve Tominia, former Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street board president and owner of Cameron’s Home Furnishings. He is being recognized for his years of distinguished service to the downtown community. Tominia was Downtown Lee’s Summit’s biggest cheerleader through construction and streetscape improvements from 2006 to 2008. He continues to be an advocate for the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit, as well as downtowns everywhere. Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads also will be at the head of the parade.

Parade judges include Dr. Fred Grogan, president of MCC-Longview; Father Tom Holder of Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church; Karen Messerli, former mayor of Lee’s Summit; Pat O’Neill of O’Neill Communications; and Mrs. Missouri America Tina York of Lee’s Summit.

The Emerald Isle Parade is presented by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street (DLSMS), and is sponsored by the Bank of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Journal. DLSMS is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit. For more information, visit www.downtownls.org or call 816-246-6598.

New activities have been added prior to the seventh annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, in Downtown Lee’s Summit. Applications for parade entries are now being accepted.

In addition to the parade, new festivities this year include a Traditional Irish Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. hosted at Mingle, 209 S.E. Main St., and a Gold Coin Hunt for ages 8 and younger at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Plaza, 220 S.E. Green St. The downtown bars and restaurants will again host an Emerald Isle Pub Crawl immediately following the parade. Tickets for the Irish Breakfast can be purchased in advance by calling the DLSMS office at 816-246-6598. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for ages 10 and younger. Tickets at the door are $12; $7 for ages 10 and younger.

Businesses and families are encouraged to decorate their entries and floats for St. Patrick’s Day while also interpreting the parade theme.

Application fees are $30 for nonprofit and family entries, or $75 for commercial, political, small business and other entries. The fees for marching bands, color guards and pipers are waived. Rules and application forms for parade entry can be found at www.downtownls.org/parade or by calling 816-246-6598. The application deadline is Feb. 24, 2012.

Patrick’s Day right here in Lee’s Summit,” he said. “This year, we hope people come not only for the parade, but also to enjoy the new festivities and the wonderful variety of shops and restaurants our downtown has to offer.”

The parade is presented by Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, and is sponsored by the Bank of Lee’s Summit and the Lee’s Summit Journal. DLSMS is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization of Downtown Lee’s Summit. For more information, visit www.downtownls.org or call 816-246-6598.
